Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hotel Alexander? It’s tucked into this narrow cobblestone street that feels like stepping back a few centuries – Garbarska is one of those Old Town lanes where you can actually hear your footsteps echo off the medieval buildings. I mean, you’re literally sleeping in the heart of Krakow’s historic center here, and honestly, that location alone makes up for any quirks a three-star place might have.

The building itself has this understated charm that grows on you. It’s not trying to be flashy or compete with the bigger chain hotels, but there’s something genuinely Polish about the whole experience. The lobby feels more like someone’s well-appointed apartment than a hotel reception – which I actually prefer to those sterile marble affairs you get at fancier places. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood instead of just reading from a script. When I asked about getting to Wawel Castle, the guy behind the desk gave me this local route that cuts through a courtyard most tourists never see.

What really won me over was how quiet the rooms are, considering you’re smack in the middle of everything. I was worried about noise – Old Town can get pretty lively, especially when the weekend crowds hit the bars on Florianska Street – but the windows actually do their job. The rooms are clean and comfortable in that European way where everything’s a bit smaller but somehow more efficient. Sure, the bathroom isn’t huge, but it’s perfectly functional, and the shower pressure was better than I expected (trust me, this matters when you’ve been walking on cobblestones all day).

The real magic happens when you step outside. You’re a three-minute walk from the Main Market Square – I timed it because I’m obsessive like that – and even closer to some of the best milk bars and pierogi spots that locals actually frequent. There’s this little bakery around the corner on Sienna that opens at 6 AM, perfect for grabbing fresh bread before the tourist buses arrive. And if you’re into the whole underground scene, the Rynek Underground museum is practically next door, though honestly, I’d recommend going early in the day before the school groups show up.

Look, Hotel Alexander isn’t going to blow you away with luxury amenities or Instagram-worthy interiors. But it delivers on what actually matters – you’re staying in a piece of living history, the beds are comfortable, it’s genuinely clean, and you can walk to everything worth seeing without dealing with trams or taxis. That 8.3 rating makes sense to me; it’s the kind of place that does the basics really well without any pretension. Plus, at three stars, you’re not paying premium prices for location that would cost you twice as much at the bigger hotels near the Cloth Hall. Sometimes the best travel experiences come from places that just feel right, you know?

Hotels in Krakow offer visitors the opportunity to stay in the heart of this medieval masterpiece, with easy access to castles, churches, and traditional Polish experiences.

  • Stylish clean hotel in a great location – Katriina from Finland – July 22, 2025 (9/10)

Location, good air conditioning, clean, comprehensive breakfast.

What could be improved: I found that the breakfast buffet was a bit disorganised and not the most optimal with lots of people. The room was also not the nicest in the basement with no windows 😞

The beds were a little too soft for my liking, but that's such a personal thing.

  • Wonderful – Joanna from United Kingdom – July 11, 2025 (9/10)
