You know what caught me off guard about Old Town Residence? Walking up to 17 Mikołajska, I was expecting just another tourist trap apartment rental, but this place actually gets it right. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute stumble from the main square – and I do mean stumble, because you’ll probably be coming back from one of those basement bars on Floriańska after midnight.

The aparthotel thing works really well here, honestly. Your room feels like a proper apartment (mine had this tiny kitchenette that was perfect for morning coffee and storing those amazing oscypek cheeses from the Cloth Hall market), but you’ve still got someone at reception who knows where to find laundry detergent at 9 PM on a Sunday. The building itself has that solid, old Krakow feel – thick walls that actually block out most of the street noise, which matters because Mikołajska can get lively during summer evenings. I stayed in July and could barely hear the horse carriages clattering by, though you’ll definitely catch the church bells from St. Mary’s – but honestly, they become part of the charm after day two.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood inside out. The guy at check-in (older fellow, spoke perfect English) steered me away from the obvious tourist restaurants and toward this incredible place called Cyrano de Bergerac just around the corner on Sławkowska – seriously, best duck I had in Poland. He also mentioned the little grocery store tucked behind the Planty gardens where locals shop, which saved me from paying tourist prices for bottled water. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable without trying too hard to be fancy – I mean, it’s a 3-star place, so don’t expect marble bathrooms, but everything works and the bed was surprisingly good. My shower had actual water pressure, which, let’s be honest, isn’t always guaranteed in these old buildings. The WiFi was solid too, which mattered since I was working remotely for part of the trip.

Location-wise, you’re in the sweet spot where you can walk to everything but still duck into quieter side streets when the main square gets overwhelming with tour groups. I’d grab breakfast at the little café on the corner of Mikołajska and Grodzka (they do this amazing sernik cheesecake), then spend the morning wandering through the Planty park before the crowds hit. Evenings, you’re close enough to the action but far enough that you can actually get some sleep. Just keep in mind that Old Town gets packed during peak season – if you’re coming in June through August, book early because the good aparthotels fill up fast, and this one’s pricing is pretty reasonable for what you get and where you are.

  I didn't have beakfast. No breakfast provided. The room was very comfortable with good facilities. It was very well located for the city centre. Excellent value for money.
  
  What could be improved: The booking site did not make it clear that there would be no reception at the hotel. All done by e-mail and codes for entry. This could cause problems if for some reason you don't have internet access. It should be more clearly stated on the Booking.com site.

  location was perfect. the street at night was quiet. easy to check in. the apartment itself was tiny but very clean. and very comfortable bed.
