Royal Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Royal on Świętego Jana street, you immediately understand why this three-star hotel has such devoted fans. The building sits right in the thick of Kraków’s Old Town — I mean, you’re literally steps from the main square, which honestly feels almost too good to be true for a place that won’t break your budget. The entrance has that classic Polish townhouse charm, nothing flashy, but there’s something reassuring about the solid wooden doors and the way the staff greets you like they actually want you there.

The Heart of Old Town

Here’s what I love about the location — you can stumble out the front door and be at St. Mary’s Basilica in about two minutes. The famous trumpet call from the tower? You’ll hear it from your room if you’re facing the right direction. Świętego Jana is one of those cobblestone streets that feels like a movie set, except it’s real and you’re actually staying there. Couples seem to get this immediately (they rate the location 9.5, which makes total sense), because there’s something undeniably romantic about wandering these medieval streets at night when the tour groups have gone home.

What Your Room Delivers

The rooms at Royal aren’t trying to be something they’re not, and I actually appreciate that. You get clean, comfortable spaces with enough character to remind you that you’re in a historic building, but modern enough that the Wi-Fi works and the shower has decent pressure. Some rooms have those thick stone walls that make you feel like you’re sleeping in a castle — well, sort of. The windows open onto either the street (where you catch glimpses of daily Kraków life) or the quieter courtyard side if you prefer your sleep undisturbed.

The Neighborhood Experience

What really sets this place apart is how it plugs you into authentic Kraków life. There’s a little restaurant practically next door where locals actually eat — not just tourists — and the morning bread smell from nearby bakeries becomes your natural alarm clock. You know what’s great? You can walk to Wawel Castle in ten minutes, but you can also duck into tiny bars that most visitors never find because they’re staying out in the hotel districts. The location score of 9.7 isn’t just marketing speak — it’s because you’re genuinely in the best possible spot to experience this city.

Why Guests Love It

Royal works because it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. You’re not paying for marble lobbies or concierge services, but you are getting an authentic slice of Kraków’s Old Town at a price that lets you spend your money on pierogi and local beer instead. The 8.4 rating reflects guests who understand they’re getting incredible value — prime location, solid comfort, and that intangible feeling of staying somewhere that’s part of the city’s fabric rather than separate from it. Honestly, for exploring Kraków on foot and soaking up the medieval atmosphere, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better base.

Very large apartment in very central location. Comfortable and unusual, with antique furniture, parquet floors, marble bathroom and generally luxury fittings. Fast wi-fi. Dishwasher and washing machine. Comfy beds. A few drawbacks, but nothing we couldn't live with, given the plus points.
