Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Szpitalna 9, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s this understated building tucked right into Old Town’s maze of cobblestone streets, but man, was I wrong about judging books by their covers. The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about what travelers need, not just what looks good in photos.

What really got me was how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between historic charm and modern comfort. The building itself has all that old Krakow character – you know, those thick walls that keep the summer heat out and the winter cold at bay – but the rooms feel genuinely contemporary without trying too hard. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Main Market Square (and I’m talking like a two-minute walk, not some “short stroll” marketing nonsense), but somehow the noise doesn’t carry. Maybe it’s those old walls working their magic, but I slept better there than I have in most city center hotels.

The location thing is actually kind of perfect if you think about it. You’re deep enough in the Old Town that you feel like you’re living in medieval Krakow, but Szpitalna Street itself isn’t one of those tourist stampede routes. So you get the authentic cobblestone-under-your-feet experience without dodging selfie sticks every morning when you grab coffee. There’s this little bakery around the corner on Sławkowska that the locals hit up – honestly, their pączki are better than anything you’ll find near the square, and it’s maybe thirty seconds from the hotel entrance.

What impressed me most was how the staff actually seemed to know the city, not just the standard tourist script. When I asked about avoiding the crowds at Wawel Castle, the guy at reception gave me this whole breakdown about timing and which entrance to use – the kind of intel you usually only get from locals. And parking, if you’re driving, is actually manageable here. There’s a garage nearby that they work with, which in Old Town Krakow is basically like finding gold.

The whole place just feels… intentional, I guess? Like someone who actually travels designed it for people who actually travel. Little things matter – good water pressure, outlets where you need them, blackout curtains that actually work. Nothing revolutionary, just everything done right. With a 9.1 rating, I was expecting it to be good, but sometimes those numbers are inflated. This wasn’t one of those times.

  The apartment was spacious and had plenty of room for 5 people. It had excellent facilities including coffee machine, fridge/freezer, washing machine etc! The location was excellent – 2 mins walk to the main old town square. Air con in each room which was great!! Also, very accommodating hosts as we asked to get into apartment early and they were able to accommodate this!! Very good price too!
  
  What could be improved: There wasn't anything we didn't like!! Only point of note would be that there were 3 flights of stairs to go up to get to the apartment – so maybe not so ideal for some guests.
