You know what hit me first walking into Hotel Unicus Palace Old Town? The lobby actually feels like someone’s incredibly wealthy great-aunt decorated it – and I mean that in the best possible way. There’s this perfect balance between old-world elegance and modern comfort that most places completely botch, but Destigo Hotels really nailed it here. The staff greeted me like I was expected, not just processed, which honestly set the tone for everything else.

The location is what really makes this place special though. I mean, you’re right in the heart of the old town – close enough that you can hear the evening buzz from the main pedestrian areas, but tucked away on a quieter side street so you’re not dealing with late-night revelry right outside your window. Walking to breakfast each morning, I’d pass these tiny local cafes that clearly cater to residents, not tourists, which tells you something about the neighborhood. The concierge (Maria, I think?) actually knew which gelato place around the corner makes their pistachio fresh daily – that’s the kind of local insight you don’t get at chain hotels.

What surprised me most was how they’ve managed to preserve the historical character without sacrificing modern conveniences. The rooms have these gorgeous original architectural details – think exposed beam ceilings and stone accents – but the Wi-Fi actually works everywhere, the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine, and the shower pressure is fantastic. I stayed in a corner room on the third floor and honestly, the view over the old town rooftops at sunset was worth the extra stairs (though there is an elevator, just a bit slow). The beds are properly firm, not that squishy hotel nonsense, and they use quality linens that don’t feel cheap after one wash. Only minor complaint? The mini-bar prices are pretty steep, but there’s a small market literally two minutes away if you’re planning ahead.

  The staff were so friendly and welcoming, I felt immediately at home. The building retains lots of original features and there are chandeliers everywhere. In the afternoon I enjoyed tea,coffee and pastries included in the room cost in the beautiful dining room. Breakfast was delicious. Of course everything was spotlessly clean. I wish I could have stayed longer and would love to stay here again
