Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about the Matejko Hotel? It’s honestly one of those places where the location just makes sense the moment you step outside. Right there on Plac Matejki – and I mean literally facing the square where that massive Grunwald Monument sits – you’re basically in the heart of Old Town without being stuck in the tourist chaos of the Main Square. Walking to Florianska Street takes maybe three minutes, but you can actually get some sleep at night because you’re just far enough from the late-night bar crowds.

The building itself has this understated Polish elegance thing going on, which I appreciate way more than some of the overly renovated places that have lost their character. It’s a solid three-star setup – nothing fancy, but everything works properly and the rooms are genuinely comfortable. The staff actually seems to know the neighborhood, too, which matters more than you’d think. When I asked about good pierogi that wasn’t tourist-trap pricing, the guy at reception immediately pointed me toward this little spot on Basztowa that I never would’ve found otherwise. The 8.3 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just doing the basics really well.

What I loved most was how easy it made exploring the city. The Planty gardens are literally across the street, so morning walks became this automatic thing. And honestly, being right on that tram line heading toward Nowa Huta saved me so much time when I wanted to see the communist-era architecture – something most visitors skip but shouldn’t. The Barbican is close enough that you’ll walk past it constantly, which sounds touristy but actually becomes kind of comforting after a few days. There’s also this great little market on Saturdays just a block away where locals actually shop, not just another souvenir setup. Check-in was smooth (they had my room ready early, which never happens), and parking – well, it’s Old Town so street parking is basically impossible, but they pointed me to a decent garage about five minutes away that wasn’t completely overpriced. The rooms get good light if you’re facing the square, though the back ones are quieter if you’re sensitive to the occasional tram sounds. I mean, it’s the city center, so you’re not getting countryside silence, but it’s really not bad at all.

Reviews

  • The best location, good hotel – Oliver from United Kingdom – August 12, 2025 (8/10)

The hotel is in the prefect location for tourists. It’s extremely close to the old town, but just far enough for it to be quiet. A very short walk and you’re in town. The room was nice and big and I think it was excellent value for money. There was a large breakfast each morning and again, worth paying for in your booking. On the whole it’s a perfectly good hotel, it’s real strength is the location. Couldn’t be better.

What could be improved: This may just be because I’m British, but I found the breakfast a bit odd. There was no tea and coffee in my room and no extra pillows in the room. I also found the staff quite unfriendly.

  • Nice hotel but a bit too expensive – Volodymyr from Ukraine – August 7, 2025 (8/10)

The location is ideal: it's just 5 minute walk from the train station and very close to the old town. The room was spacey and comfortable. Although it faced the street, there was rather little noise, probably because of good insulation. Breakfast was very good. Staff was friendly and helpful.

What could be improved: There was neither coffee maker nor even tea kettle in the room. The price was rather high for this city.

  • Wonderful – Rapacz from United Kingdom – August 5, 2025 (9/10)

Very pleasant staff, clean, great location.

  • We had a lovely stay the staff are very friendly and accommodating we had a brilliant time – Keshelle from United Kingdom – July 21, 2025 (8/10)

How central it is, so convenient as we walked everywhere

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Went very well. Very comfortable – Harrison from Canada – July 17, 2025 (8/10)

    Excellent location

What could be improved: No fridge in my room

  • Wonderful – Maryna from Norway – July 11, 2025 (9/10)

Nice hotel with an ideal location

  • Great hotel in a great location. – Ruth from Ireland – July 8, 2025 (9/10)

Lovely little hotel in a fantastic location. Easy to get to from the airport. Staff are all helpful and courteous. It is within walking distance of some great shopping, restaurants and bars. I got a suite and was delighted that I made the choice to upgrade.

What could be improved: The hotel could do with updating the rooms a little. Walls need painting, and some bathroom fittings need to be replaced. The furniture is a little worn.
These are very minor negatives that did not affect my overall stay.

  • Great Hotel – Close to everything and very quiet – Patcher from Australia – July 2, 2025 (9/10)

The hotel is situated very close to the Old Town, under 10 mins from the main square, the room was quiet, room 114, couldn't hear the church bells. There is a convenience store 3 shops down from the hotel and a nice bar next to it… 5 mins walk from the trams. There is also a tourist pickup point in the same block for tours. The hotel on the whole is very nice, close enough to everything and far enough away from the hustle and bustle, making it very quiet…

What could be improved: You couldn't get any WiFi in the hotel room 114 only from near the stairs of the hotel, so a lot of the hotel guests would gather there to make calls or to use their phones, the cleaners storage room was located just outside our hotel room, so there was a little bit of noise as they discussed their day and went about their jobs…

  • Highly recommended – Andrea from Italy – June 30, 2025 (9/10)

    Quality/price ratio, location

What could be improved: Not all receptionists were particularly friendly (but still very efficient).

  • Excellent value for money with central location – Peasoup from United Kingdom – June 22, 2025 (7/10)

Ample breakfast selection. Choice of cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit , breads, meats and cheeses. Sausages and scrambled eggs. Plenty of juices and teas and coffee.
    Bottle of water in room
Very helpful staff, particularly Patricia who went out of her way to answer my questions and advise us.

What could be improved: Would have liked tea and coffee in room
