Zakamarki Overview

You know what’s funny about Kraków? Everyone talks about the main square, but honestly, some of the best finds are tucked away on streets you’d never think to look. Bożego Ciała is one of those – I mean, it literally translates to “Corpus Christi Street,” which sounds all formal, but it’s actually this quiet cobblestone lane where locals cut through to avoid the tourist crowds on Grodzka. That’s where you’ll find Zakamarki, and the name is perfect because “zakamarki” means “hidden corners” in Polish.

The thing about staying here is that you’re properly in Old Town – like, medieval-walls-and-church-bells Old Town – but without the noise that comes with being right on the main drag. I stayed on the first floor (which is actually the second floor if you’re American, because Europeans count differently), and honestly, the morning routine became this lovely ritual of opening the windows to hear the city waking up without the tour groups yet. The rooms have this authentic feel without being stuffy about it – exposed brick where it makes sense, modern bathrooms that actually work properly, and beds that don’t creak when you roll over at 3am. Small details, but they matter when you’re trying to sleep off all that pierogi and Żywiec.

What really sold me on this place was how the staff just… knew things. Not in an intrusive way, but when I mentioned wanting to find a good milk bar (those communist-era cafeterias that serve cheap, authentic Polish food), they didn’t send me to some tourist trap – they directed me to Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą, which is maybe a seven-minute walk and where I ended up eating three times because the zurek was incredible. The front desk guy also casually mentioned that if I was planning to visit Wawel Castle, Thursday mornings are weirdly less crowded than weekends, and he was absolutely right. That’s the kind of local insight you can’t get from a chain hotel.

The location really is something special though – you can walk to basically everything that matters in about ten minutes, but more importantly, you’re staying where Kraków actually feels like Kraków. Early mornings, you’ll see people heading to work at the little shops along Grodzka, and evenings there’s this perfect golden hour light that hits the building facades just right. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the street has this particular smell of old stone and coffee from the café downstairs that just feels European in the best way. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not flashy luxury, but everything works exactly as it should, and the whole experience feels genuine rather than performed. If you want to stay somewhere that feels like you’re actually in Kraków rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.

  • We are grateful for the accomodation. We saw the Salt Mine, Wawel, Rynek Glowny, ZOO, … – Danica from Slovakia – August 30, 2023 (9/10)

We were 2 adults and 5 kids (age 7-13). We wanted to see the city, some sights and places. And, of course, experience some fun and travel adventure 🙂 The flat was very good and clean. There was everything we needed. Very good location, shops and restaurants nearby. Travelling by trams was very easy and we could get everywhere we wanted by trams and then on foot. BTW we came by train.

What could be improved: We stayed from Monday to Saturday in August and, surprisingly, every night there were some concerts across the street. It was noisy till after midnight and then a lot of people walked and talked down in the street till 3 AM. We didn't use the air-conditioning (because of the kids) though it's at the disposal in the flat. We had our windows opened instead. So that's why it was noisy, but closed windows dampened the noise.
